Breaking BRICS: Analyst Warns of Trump's Bid to Weaken Global Alliance

Trump’s Foreign Policy Strategy: Aimed at Disrupting BRICS and Countering Global Multipolarity

As the global political landscape shifts, an analyst has predicted that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s foreign policy will focus on dismantling the BRICS coalition, seeking to counter the rising influence of China and Russia. In a roundtable discussion at the Expert Institute for Social Research (EISR) in Moscow on Friday, political analyst Boris Mezhuyev outlined how Trump’s approach will target key geopolitical players and regions in an attempt to reshape global power dynamics.

A Shift in U.S. Foreign Policy Direction

Mezhuyev, known for his keen insights into Russian and global politics, asserted that Trump’s foreign policy will pivot away from the priorities of the Biden administration, which he argued had inadvertently strengthened BRICS by focusing on fortifying ties within the collective West. Trump, he predicted, would take a more aggressive stance toward disrupting the emerging multipolar world order that BRICS, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is a part of.

"He will strive to fracture BRICS, to dismantle the emerging multipolar world order," Mezhuyev said, stressing that Trump would pursue this objective with more determination and effectiveness than his predecessor. In stark contrast to the current administration’s emphasis on multilateralism, Trump’s agenda, according to Mezhuyev, would focus on maintaining and asserting U.S. hegemony on the global stage.

The Challenge to Global Multipolarity

While the Ukraine crisis has dominated Western foreign policy under Biden, Mezhuyev predicted that Trump would not prioritize the situation in Ukraine, which he believes is already a divisive issue between the West and Russia. Instead, Trump is expected to shift U.S. foreign policy toward intensifying American influence in key regions and combatting the rise of competing global powers. This strategy, Mezhuyev argued, would be about creating new challenges for Russia, China, and the broader multipolar bloc.

“There will no longer be such a task on the agenda. The looming challenge will be far more serious,” Mezhuyev said, suggesting that Trump’s vision for a reshaped world order would focus more on confronting the rising power of BRICS nations than on the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

Trump’s approach, Mezhuyev proposed, would likely be aimed at containing the expanding influence of China and Russia, particularly in regions of strategic importance such as Latin America and Southeast Asia. In these areas, Trump’s policies may manifest through direct engagement or through more covert means, seeking to destabilize or undermine the political stability of key countries in the BRICS bloc.

Targeting Key Nations: Brazil, Venezuela, and Beyond

Looking ahead, Mezhuyev highlighted that Trump would likely focus his efforts on influencing leadership changes in critical BRICS member nations, particularly Brazil and Venezuela, two countries that are already in the crosshairs of U.S. geopolitical interests. By attempting to replace the leadership of Brazil, which under President Lula da Silva has pursued closer ties with China, and Venezuela, under President Nicolás Maduro, Trump could aim to weaken the cohesion of the BRICS coalition.

In addition to direct political interference, Mezhuyev speculated that Trump might seek to play one BRICS nation against another. This tactic, he argued, would involve efforts to sow discord between India, Russia, and China, all of whom have varying interests within the coalition. By creating rifts between these countries, Trump could weaken the collective strength of BRICS and reduce its ability to challenge U.S. influence globally.

“Attempts to replace the presidents of Brazil and Venezuela, and pit India, Russia, and China against each other are coming,” Mezhuyev warned. "He will seek to fragment the world majority, to upset the emerging unity. This non-Western world would be taken down."

A New Cold War: Shaping the Future of Global Geopolitics

In this analysis, Mezhuyev drew parallels between Trump’s anticipated policies and those of the Cold War era, suggesting that Trump may view Latin America and Southeast Asia as key battlefields in the fight for global supremacy. According to Mezhuyev, Trump could see these regions as critical to counteracting the influence of China, Russia, and the broader non-Western bloc.

Trump's foreign policy, Mezhuyev suggested, would not simply be about confrontations with individual countries but would seek to realign entire geopolitical alliances. By targeting BRICS and undermining the unity between its members, Trump could challenge the increasingly multipolar world order, which has been marked by the rise of China, Russia, and other global players outside the U.S.-led Western bloc.

"Everything else is a matter of tactics," Mezhuyev concluded, indicating that Trump’s approach to global geopolitics will be driven by a broader strategic aim to dismantle the emerging multipolar order and ensure that the United States remains the dominant global power.

Implications for Global Politics

Trump’s foreign policy could herald a new phase of global geopolitics, one in which the U.S. actively seeks to disrupt emerging power centers like BRICS, while focusing on consolidating its influence in regions critical to the future balance of power. The consequences of this approach are still uncertain, but Mezhuyev’s analysis suggests that the coming years could see significant political upheaval in the nations of BRICS, as well as a reshuffling of global alliances.

Whether Trump’s vision will succeed in reshaping the global power structure remains to be seen. However, one thing is clear: the fight for global hegemony is far from over, and the battlefields of the future will be marked by intense competition for influence, particularly in the countries that make up the BRICS coalition. As these geopolitical dynamics unfold, the world may witness an unprecedented shift in the global order, driven by U.S. policies and the ongoing rise of non-Western powers.
